Summer is here and the farmers of Snow Country are hard at work in their fields and orchards. One of the joys of this season is all the fresh produce that is available. There are small farmers’ stalls dotted around the byways of the region selling recently harvested fruit and vegetables to passers-by. If you feel like the very freshest of fruit then there are several places you can go to pick it right off the tree or bush.
Japanese fruit is highly regarded across the world and commands a premium price for its delicious flavor and its quality which is the result of the great care that the farmers take. The exact time of year will dictate what fruit you are able to pick but strawberries grown in glass houses in spring, or in summer, blueberries, plums, cherries, grapes, and apples can all be enjoyed. There is even an area that is famous for wonderfully sweet watermelon though you might have to settle for buying this from the side of the road.
Most places give you the option to buy the fruit that has already been picked, pick it yourself to take away with you, or our personal favorite, an eat-as-much-as-you-like deal for about 30 minutes. This is a gluttonous, but glorious way to enjoy the bounty of the seasons.
Often people associate Snow Country with rice, pickles, and warming winter hotpots, but a trip up here in summer offers and abundance of fresh, delicious flavors too.
If vegetable are more your thing you can try picking asparagus, digging for potatoes, picking tomatoes, or picking corn.
